Barbara D. Savage is an American historian and professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania. She was born in 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975 and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1983. Savage is a specialist in African American history and the history of race and ethnicity in the United States. She is the author of several books, including Your Spirits Walk Beside Us: The Politics of Black Religion (2008), which won the 2009 John Hope Franklin Best Book Award from the American Studies Association. She is also the author of Broadcasting Freedom: Radio, War, and the Politics of Race, 1938-1948 (1999), which won the 2000 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award from the Organization of American Historians. Savage is a member of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Studies Association. She is also a fellow of the Society of American Historians. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of American History and the Journal of African American History. Savage is married to the historian and author, David Levering Lewis. They have two children.
